  • BIGCAT – Atlas (Cassette, 2022)

    BIGCAT – Atlas (Cassette, 2022)

    #5123

    GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker:

BIGCAT’s latest release, “Atlas,” is a beautiful collection of tracks that incorporate drones, tiny synth melodics, synthscapes, chopped percussion, field recordings, and more. This experimental project, based out of Oakland, CA, blends drone, glitch beats derived from sampled percussive objects, field recordings, and found sounds in a way that is both innovative and captivating.

“Atlas” transports listeners into an almost tropical realm, creating an immersive experience akin to a rainforest on a hot and humid evening. The album’s warm and inviting feel is complemented by its use of Javanese Gamelan and Indonesian folk samples, synthesizer drones, recordings of natural sounds, samples from old sci-fi films, and homemade percussion that is digitally edited.

Standout track “Voodoo Sisters” cooks up an extremely busy blend of reggae dub, sampled voices, and drum and bass rhythms. It maintains a steady drive while still sounding ambient, showcasing BIGCAT’s ability to balance different elements effectively. “Old Machinery” layers various discordant found sound rhythmic patterns alongside evocative ambient synths to great effect.

“Karaya II,” another noteworthy track, showcases BIGCAT’s mastery of the studio with its sparse vocal samples, chopped up percussion, ambient synth swells, and deep subsonic bass. The track manages to be both mellow and tense, demonstrating the artist’s skill in creating complex sonic textures.

Lastly, “Atlas” is a fantastic album to listen to on headphones, especially with a headphone amplifier. The masterful use of textures by BIGCAT is further showcased when listened to in this manner.

In conclusion, “Atlas” by BIGCAT is an outstanding album from start to finish. Its controlled diversity and beat-filled tranquil ambient radiance make it a composition meant for long duration in any listening form. It is deliciously crafted with sonic flavors from forgotten realms and serves as an odyssey of heartwarming selections built upon tribal rhythms and courtly ceremony.

A collaboration between Tom Furgas & Chris Phinney of glitch & minimalist synths, with fx. Tom Furgas – glitch electronics with Soundplant sampler. cover art. Chris Phinney, synths,fx, final mix & production at Harsh Reality Music. Recorded November, 2022 tomfurgas1.bandcamp.com

    GAJOOB REVIEW BY BRYAN BAKER:

Chris Phinney’s recent collaborations have him painting a coating of ambient drone synths as a bed for his collaborators to either walk on top or to add additional layers ambience; often both. On this album, Furgas offers a set of glitch electronics and samples that sputter randomly throughout Phinney’s subdued atmospheric washes, making for a beautiful sound(e)scape. –Reviewed by Bryan Baker .

Mental Anguish – Vagrant Series Volume One (2022)

    Digital 5110

    REVIEW:

This is a new series of releases from Mental Anguish on Brazilian netlabel Grimm Goat Records, one each week beginning October 2022 and ending I’m not sure when. To my ears, these four 10-minute pieces in the first column in Mental Anguish’s new Vagrant series are a shimmering kind of electronic ambient noise with musical patterns shifting in a cascade of pulsating sonics surrounded by the groans of the damned. The pieces end in a sudden way, almost like a choke, to start again with a renewed burst. –Reviewed by Bryan Baker, 2022

  • Ian M Bailey – You Paint the Pictures (2022 CD)

Ian M Bailey – You Paint the Pictures (2022 CD)

    CD 5106

    Kool Kat’s Press Release

On You Paint The Pictures, Ian M Bailey has once again teamed up with Scotland’s songsmith and Cosmic Rough Rider Daniel Wylie to deliver another 11 co-written tracks of beautifully melodic and well crafted songs. Recorded and produced at Ian’s home studio in England, the album is rich in melody and interwoven with Ian’s trademark 12 string Rickenbacker, adding its unmistakable jangle to the blend of bass, drums, keys and harmonies all of which are provided by Ian whilst Alan Gregson adds string sections and pedal steel guitar. The album is musically inspired by such greats as The Byrd’s, The Doors, The Association, The Beatles, The Jayhawks, R.E.M, Santana, The Moody Blues and Gene Clark.”

    GAJOOB’s Review

Bailey’s new CD is, indeed, a combination of all those influences and people who are fans of such things (like me) will get into this as well. And this one is well worth adding to that part of your collection; I find myself returning to it often. It stands on its own due to Bailey’s strong melodies and frequently surprising instrumental touches that make this one a keeper. – Bryan Baker, GAJOOB #12, 2022

    REVIEW:

“Time Jewels” by Jack Hertz is a captivating sonic journey that immerses the listener in a world of intricate soundscapes. As a longtime contact for GAJOOB, dating back to his days as a founder in chief of the Poison Plant music label, Hertz exhibits an unquestionable mastery over his craft in this album.

The album, hosted on Bandcamp, explores the concept of time through a series of atmospheric compositions that spark the imagination and transport listeners to different dimensions. Each track is like a precious gem, unique and multifaceted, reflecting Hertz’s exploration of time as an abstract concept.

Hertz’s signature style, characterized by its experimental edge and deep emotional resonance, shines throughout the album. The tracks are layered with a variety of sounds that create a rich tapestry of auditory experience. Hertz skillfully manipulates sound to produce tracks that are both complex and accessible, challenging yet soothing.

The album’s production quality is top-notch, with each sound meticulously crafted and positioned for maximum impact. The result is a cohesive body of work that feels both intimate and expansive, personal yet universal.

“Time Jewels” is a testament to Jack Hertz’s creative prowess and his ability to push the boundaries of music. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Hertz or new to his work, “Time Jewels” is a sonic experience you don’t want to miss.

    The Bim Prongs/Furchick – EC Split 15

    GAJOOB Archive #4210

from Electronic Cottage | Digital Download

Through nearly 30 albums that make up the EC Split series, Hal McGee has often made the pairing of artists an added experience to the album. W.A. Davison (The Bim Prongs) and Claire Pannell (Furchick) mine similar experimental veins in their own soundscapes. On this album, the differences to me are that Furchick’s “side” is three distinct pieces each with a different combination of sounds. Her approach is less loop-oriented than Davison’s here I think, but both collage sounds that revolve and call back. Both sides are filled with real sounds, while synthesized and manipulated textures seep into each mix as well.
