Foster Body – Moving Display (Digital, 2016)

    No.5197

    GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker:

“Moving Display,” a digital album by Foster Body released in 2016, is an adrenaline-fueled foray into the world of experimental punk rock. Filled with manic vocals, atonal, driven rhythms, and a pace that never lets up, this album showcases the band’s ability to push boundaries while delivering a sound that is thoroughly engaging.

Written between 2014 and 2015, “Moving Display” exudes raw energy and youthful exuberance. From start to finish, the album is a wild ride that never slows down. The spastic vocals, reminiscent of bands like the B-52s, give the music a distinctive edge, while the lurching, frantic blasts of bass/guitar/drums are on perpetual freak out.

The music on “Moving Display” is fast-paced and chaotic, but there’s an underlying sense of purpose to the chaos. It’s as if the band is trying to keep up with their own rapid-fire transitions, resulting in a sound that is both thrilling and slightly unhinged. Yet, despite the frantic pace, the musicianship remains tight throughout, demonstrating the band’s skill and control.

The production, handled by Michael Fuchs of Passive Tourist, is top-notch. Every instrument is clearly audible, allowing the listener to fully appreciate the intricate interplay between the various elements of the band’s sound. The mastering, done by Matt Mateus, further enhances the quality of the recording, ensuring that every note hits with maximum impact.

What sets Foster Body apart is their ability to create music that is both challenging and accessible. While the arrangements are complex and the rhythms often unpredictable, the songs remain catchy and memorable. This balance makes “Moving Display” not just a fascinating listen, but also a fun one.

It’s an album that isn’t afraid to take risks, and these risks pay off in the form of a unique and exhilarating listening experience. If you’re a fan of experimental punk rock, or just adventurous music in general, this is an album you won’t want to miss.

    I wish there was more!

Jim Tetlow – Experiments From Day 17869 (Digital, 2023)

    No.5194

    GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker:

“Experiments From Day 17869,” a 42’42” minute piece by Jim Tetlow, is an audacious exploration of sound. Released on November 11, 2023, this work reveals an innovative approach to music-making.

Crafted from four improvisations recorded on September 23, 2023 — the 17869th day of Tetlow’s life, hence the title — the album serves as a rehearsal for a UV Spectra gig with Andy Atyeo. The recording offers a unique glimpse into the creative process, showcasing the energy and spontaneity that underpin Tetlow’s artistry.

The abstract nature of the album title reflects the music within. The listener is drawn into a world of soft buzzes, hushed feedback, and low growls, creating an atmosphere that is both soothing and slightly eerie. It’s like stepping into a nocturnal landscape, where unseen creatures whisper in the dark.

Tetlow’s music has an organic, breathing quality to it. The sounds seem to ebb and flow naturally, creating a sense of movement that is hypnotic. It’s easy to lose yourself in these soundscapes, letting the waves of sound wash over you as you journey through Tetlow’s sonic universe.

Despite the experimental nature of the music, there is a warmth and familiarity to it that is truly captivating. Tetlow’s use of looping and layering creates textures that are rich and complex, yet accessible. The result is a listening experience that is immersive, engaging, and deeply satisfying.

Special mention must be made of the production quality. Tetlow’s skills as a mixer and master are evident throughout the album, and the artwork, featuring imagery courtesy of MidJourney, adds a visual dimension that enhances the overall experience.

Discover a bold and exciting exploration of sound that pushes the boundaries of what music can be. It’s a testament to Tetlow’s creativity and his ability to create beauty from chaos. This album is a must-listen for anyone seeking a unique and enriching musical experience.

GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker, 8 Nov 2023:

An Auditory Banquet of Unconventional Sounds

In the realm of experimental music, Don Campau’s Stolen Spectrum stands as a testament to his unyielding creativity and innovative spirit. Released in 2023, this album is a daring departure (par for Don) from conventional musical structures and an immersive exploration into the world of free jazz, improvisation, and contemporary composition.

Stolen Spectrum is devoid of vocals, songs, or wild rock guitars. Instead, it offers an eclectic mix of odd sounds, atonal guitars, keyboards, percussion, and more, layered over cut-up and randomly assembled loops. The latter is an intriguing element of re-contextualized music ‘stolen’ from various artists, serving as the bedrock for Campau’s sonic experimentations.

The resulting compositions range from haunting to playful, and always captivating. Each track is a unique auditory journey that immerses listeners in Campau’s imaginative soundscapes. The album truly lives up to its name, stealing elements from a spectrum of sources to create something entirely new and engaging.

Campau’s masterful manipulation of sounds, both musical and otherwise, creates a feast for the ears that’s hard to resist. Whether you’re a seasoned fan of experimental music or a curious newcomer, Stolen Spectrum offers a fascinating experience. It challenges preconceptions about what music can be while providing an enjoyable listening experience.

One of the standout aspects of this album is Campau’s commitment to supporting other artists in the field. He encourages listeners to download Stolen Spectrum for free but asks them to support other artists creating unusual sound art like free jazz and modern improv in return. This gesture underscores his dedication to nurturing the experimental music community.

Stolen Spectrum is an audacious exploration of sound that pushes the boundaries of music. It’s a must-listen for anyone interested in experimental sound art and a shining example of Don Campau’s innovative spirit.
