Dino DiMuro – Train Going Nowhere (A Rock Album) (CD, 2000)

GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker, 12/2/2000:

Five years in the making, hometaping demigod Dino DiMuro delivers the expected in delivering something completely unsuspected here. With computers becoming ever-present in hometaping circles you might think Dino would return to the scene with an opus of progressive magnitude. But true to form, DiMuro continues to surprise. This “rock album” contains, as Queen was fond of saying in better days, NO SYNTHESIZERS. And the guitars come at you thick with crunching riffs to rival Lou Reed with a clean power that pummels out of the speakers like a monster. The meat of the album is pure Dino on guitar and bass, along with Terry Rodman on drums and Tony Lamberti on digital drums. Lots of guests make appearances as well, notably Kevin Fowler on lead vocals on two tracks, lots of guitarists (Alan Rankin, Chris Assells, Mike Reagan, BB Russell) and vocalists (Don Campau, Robin O’Brien, Linda DeFranco, Julie DiMuro), and Jay Richardson on sax. DiMuro has been spinning sound candy for many years and those of you familiar and fond of his kiss-cut album crafting will find it alive and well here as well; notably on wife Julia’s “Surrounded By Love” improvised song to their baby which segues hilariously into “Talkin’ With the Wise Guy” — you gotta hear it, you gotta hear it. Which, needless to say, goes for the entire album — you gotta hear it.

“Badminton, The Volleys” by Seeded Plain is a sonic exploration that challenges traditional notions of music and sound. Released in 2023, this album is a testament to the inventive genius of Jay Kreimer and Bryan Day, who have used their unique skills to create a work that is as engaging as it is innovative.

The album, recorded across various locations in India during October 2022, is a fascinating blend of improvised sounds and invented instruments. Kreimer, a seasoned musician and instrument inventor, brings his expertise to the fore, creating a soundscape that is both familiar and foreign. Day, an adventurer in sound and a creator of intriguing contraptions, adds his distinctive touch, resulting in a sonic experience that is truly one-of-a-kind.

“Badminton, The Volleys” is a journey through a world of machine shop percussion, diverse plucks, plonks, bends, brushes, patterns, crashes, rumbling drones and more. The sounds swell and lull, creating a dynamic rhythm that keeps the listener engaged throughout.

  • Ian M. Bailey – We Live In Strange Times (CD, 2023)

Ian M. Bailey – We Live In Strange Times (CD, 2023)

    No.5182

GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker, 11/7/23:

A Harmonious Blend of Melody, Jangle, and Nostalgia.

Kool Kat Musik has a knack for discovering and showcasing distinctive talent, and Ian M. Bailey’s third release on the label, “We Live In Strange Times,” is a testament to this. Teaming up once again with Scotland’s songsmith and Cosmic Rough Rider Daniel Wylie, Bailey delivers an album rich in melody, hooks, and a unique blend of musical influences.

Recorded and produced at Bailey’s home studio, “Small Space Studios,” the album is a melodic tour-de-force. The 12 co-written tracks are a harmonious blend of Bailey’s trademark 6 & 12 string Rickenbacker jangles, bass, drums, keys, and harmonies, all provided by Bailey himself. Alan Gregson’s additions of string sections, Hammond, Rhodes piano, and lap steel create a rich tapestry that further enhances the album’s musical depth.

“We Live In Strange Times” showcases Bailey’s ability to channel the musical inspirations of greats like The Beatles, The Byrds, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Gene Clark, The Moody Blues, and Eric Burdon’s War into his work. Yet, Bailey’s individuality shines through, making the album more than just a homage to these legends.

Standout tracks like “It’s Summer Rain” and the titular “We Live In Strange Times” are beautiful examples of Bailey’s songwriting prowess. The Beatles’ influence is evident, extending even to the sitar sounds on “Mother Nature.” Bailey also ventures into more progressive territory with the instrumental track “She Waltzes With the Devil,” a piece that adds an intriguing dimension to the album.

However, it’s not just the music that stands out in Bailey’s latest offering. The album’s title, “We Live In Strange Times,” is a reflection of the current global climate and resonates deeply with listeners. It’s a gentle reminder that music can be an escape, a source of comfort, and a beacon of hope in uncertain times.

In conclusion, “We Live In Strange Times” is a well-crafted album that demonstrates Bailey’s ability to blend nostalgic influences with his distinctive style. Despite its roots in the past, the album feels fresh and relevant, making it a must-listen for any fan of melodic, jangle-pop music.

Watch for the album’s release 24 November 2023.
