15-Doug Michael Overdrive
Doug Michael: Guitars, Bass, Synth, Drum Loops
The recording was done with Cubase and Reason rewired together. I used Reason for the synth sounds. The guitars were done completely in Cubase.. No amps - all software distortion plugs. This tune, for me at least, solidified my theory that one day we will not need amps for recording. I was really surprised at the quality of tone I was able to get out of the factory cubase plugs and a decent sounding guitar. This tune contains around 50 to 60 tracks, not all playing at once... but there are at least 6-10 guitars layered on each section. It gets a bit tricky to mix but if done right you can get a really nice big guitar sound. This was what I was going for. I usually spend way more time mixing than composing or recording. And this tune was no exception.... I did close to 15 mixes before I settled on this one....
We live in a great time for music making. I remember the days of recording into a 4 track cassette recorder. Very limiting to say the least... but good music was still made. Now it’s virtually limitless and we can make very high quality sounding music in our bedrooms. It’s a great time indeed.
